WWF Voluntery Week 23/06 - 01/07 2007

I went on a 9 days voluntery work with WWF to help on conservation work for Hawksbill turtle...

WWF is a environment conservation organization who help at all kind of environment issues. Me and Suzanne has join them for 9 days voluntery work to help on conservation on hawkbill Turtle...

Some story about this island:

Two nautical miles off the coast of Klebang is Pulau Upeh. A tiny island of seven acres, it can easily be explored on foot within 30 minutes.
Formerly known as Ilha Das Pedra, which means 'places of stone', the island has come a long way from its quarrying days when the Portuguese reigned supreme. Now the island is being abandon, and nothing much is going on there, besides some security person, basicaly, the island is empty.

What I learned from this voluntery work:

1. How to recognize what steps of the turtle nesting by listening to the sound... pro ya!

2. The nesting behaviour of the hawkbill turtle. (Come up shore, body pitting, digging egg chamber, lays egg, cover egg chamber, sand bathing, return to sea)

3. I can now pick up the egg from the egg chamber and put it into the box. Do not think this is easy, you cannot turn the egg at all.. have to be very careful! And also measure the egg size and weight.

4. Besides the above, the staff will measure the turtle length and width of the carapace, relocate the egg, measure how far is the nest to the shoreline, the depth of the nest, send the egg back to hactery, after 3 month, when the egg hatched, measure the hatchlings, and release back to the sea.

5. How bad is the population of the turtle in Malaysia, Hawksbill is critically endanger, and Letherbacks is almost extincted, there are 7 type of turtle in the world, and Malaysia have 4 of them, besides the 2 above, there are green turtle and Olive Ridley (which no one know where they are, extincted?)

6. Every one thousand hatchlings, only 1 survive to adulthood.. that is very little, and this is only estimated number not including bycatch or dead because of boat crash or other reasons.

7. Because of the handling causes, the hatchlings rate is lower compare to natural hatched. But there are no other way to protect it, the fisherman or procher will just find the egg, and sell it for food... terrible!

Come on guys, please dont buy any turtle's product, if you have time to spare, join them, if not, become a donor of WWF, at least help on the fund, and they can hire more people to help to save the turtle.. Of cause they didnt only work on turtle's conservation, but others, please feel free to visit their new website: www.wwf.org.my

In this 9 dyas of work, we have experience 7 turtles in total, very lucky of us. Almost all are tagged turtle (means come up to nest earlier, and tagged with numbering tag started with Alphabert MY which means "Malaysia Turtle" i assume... hei hei), but we have 2 new one.. I have record the date and number of egg, just for my record:

23th June - 1 turtle
24th June - no turtle :-(
25th June - no turtle again....:-(((
26th June - 1 turtle :-)
27th June - 2 turtles :-))))))
28th June - 1 "NEW turtle"
29th June - 1 "NEW turtle" again...
30th June - last day already.... 1 turtle
1st July - Return home!! sob sob!

so total of less than thousand of eggs, come to think about it, might not have one will grown until adulthood! so sad! ok ok.. be positive ya! At least we gave the efford here...
